Tips For This Year’s Draft

Cesar Melgoza, Reporter

Hours before the draft and I am still undecided on whether I should draft my favorite player, Ezekiel Elliot, or take the next best available running back, David Johnson.

Ezekiel Elliot faces a six-game suspension, but on Aug. 29, his suspension is up for appeal. The process of appeal is a lengthy one, but could reduce his ban or overturn the NFL’s official ruling.

There is thirteen weeks in fantasy. Six games can make a huge difference. It can decide if I make playoffs or not.

My first pick is for sure going to be a running back no matter what. Running backs are an easy way to get points in fantasy. I didn’t want to risk getting Elliot because the NFL hates the Cowboys, so I choose David Johnson as my first pick. In our league we decided to do a snake draft so now I have to wait 10 picks for my next draft.

According to NFL analyst, Adam Schefter, Elliot has a really good chance of his six -game ban getting appealed.

I saw most of everyone going for quarterbacks and wide receivers for their first picks so I was for sure confident with my next two picks. Most of the running backs were still there but I was debating on either DeMarco Murray from the Tennessee Titans or Jordan Howard from the Chicago Bears. I decided to go with DeMarco Murray because he has more experience and the Titans are a two-way team since they have a decent quarterback in Marcus Mariota.

Since I had the last pick in that round and the first in the following round, I had to take advantage of consecutive picks, and I decided to go with a quarterback since I already drafted running backs. Drew Brees, who was the NFL’s passing  leader with 5,280 yards, was the best positional player that would fit my team. Drew Brees in the most accurate quarterback in the NFL and has been a consistent fantasy player that could light it up any given day.

The next couple of rounds I am mostly just taking the best guy available. I was mostly looking for another running back for my flex position and I wanted to take a chance on the rookie running back, Christian McCaffery. McCaffery, who skipped last year’s Sun Bowl, is a two-way running back that can get points by running and receiving the ball. He’s a dual threat that can make more points than most running backs. It’s a big risk taking a rookie this early, but I feel that he has a lot of upside and I think he’s a steal.

I had to choose a wide receiver. When choosing wide receivers I target red zone threats. Dez Bryant was still available and he is one of the best wide receivers in the red zone. Bryant had eight touchdowns last season but he played in thirteen games. The only concern that I had with picking Bryant is that the Dallas Cowboys are a run first team.

Choosing a defense or special teams is a tough decision because it’s hard to choose a team with a good defense but not a good special team and vice versa. I decided to go with the Giants since they had one of the toughest defenses in the league and have decent special teams with Dwayne Harris returning punts and kickoffs. My draft would continue with players that could potentially help my team as the season went on.

I feel confident in my team and I am ready to win.

Tips: Go for David Johnson and Christian McCaffery is a steal. Go heavy on running backs and stay away from drafting kickers. Do not waste time on kickers, you can always pick them up on the waiver wire.
