Whoop! Whoop! The sound of the new police station being built across Pebble Hills will soon be completed.

What was originally scheduled to open December 2023, has now been scheduled for a grand opening in March of this year. Located less than a mile from campus and situated at the intersection of Pebble Hills Blvd. and Tim Foster.

The police department and other new builds in the Pebble Hills area have been the subject of discussion among residents and students. First it was the construction of the Tierra Este Nursing and Rehabilitation Center causing stir because of how close it is to the school.

Now, some are concerned with the new police department causing more disturbance with the traffic from football games, school events, and police sirens going off at unpredictable hours.

“I feel like the police station is in a bad spot, but I’m glad it’s somewhere near our school,” sophomore Chassity Bryant said. “Before and after school the traffic will be way worse now because of the police station.”

The placement of it might seem strange, but can also help reduce the amount of uncited traffic violations that occur in the area.

“I don’t like it just because it seems pretty out of place, sophomore Areli Tellez said. “I will say, I know some people would support the building of it because there’s a lot of teens that use that long road to race and it causes a lot of accidents,” Tellez stated.

Some students believe that it’s reassuring to see the police presence across the street from Pebble Hills, especially after the recent lockdown and bomb threats at Eastlake and Montwood High School.

With the increasing number of crime in the area, resulting in injuries or deaths, according to an Education Week analysis, it’s great to see measures being taken to ensure the safety of our students.

“With gun threats, which happen quite often; it will allow the school to be safer which will make people want to send their kids to Pebble Hills for their high school years,” senior Alexander Zubia said.
