The Pebble Hills varsity boys’ soccer team played against Americas’ High School last Friday on Feb. 23 and defeated them 2-1, putting them in first place as Eastlake lost to Socorro High School.

The Spartans have had a good season so far, having a total of 20 goals in just the past four games. Their season high 7-0 win was against Coronado last Tuesday, Feb. 20.

In this season, the team has had an 8-1 district record and a 14-2 overall. In last year’s season, Pebble Hills finished in third place with an 11-5 record. This already shows the team’s improvement in the program as compared to last year’s season.

The boys are preparing for Wednesday’s game against Socorro High School on Feb. 28. Socorro defeated Eastlake last Saturday which made them second place in the district. Pebble Hills continues to practice under pressure to secure their spot in first place.

“It’s going to be a hard game to play, they are coming off a good win against Eastlake and I feel like at the end of the night we are going to end their playoffs soon,” senior captain Brian Lira said.

Senior Daniel Vasquez is confident for Socorro’s game and he helps his team stay motivated.

“I like to take off pressure from my teammates and get them a bit more comfortable with their surroundings, especially because Coach Garcia does put a lot of pressure on the new players. So, I like to involve them with the team,” said Vasquez in regard to preparing for Tuesday’s game.

Junior Andrew de Leon speaks about last Friday’s game against Americas.

“I feel like we struggled a bit, we got too cocky and a little bit too confident. This was just a little setback, but I feel like we will come back from it. I think we can keep winning from here and get Districts,” de Leon said.

After a wind advisory, Pebble Hills welcomes Socorro tonight at 7:30 p.m. and will head to Montwood Friday.
