Pebble Hills men’s choir will be preforming a concert along with other district high schools and middle schools Saturday night Dec. 10. to celebrate the holidays.

The first rehearsal with all the schools together was Thursday, Nov. 10 at Americas High School.

Students will be provided with dinner sponsored by choir and will be given transportation to and from locations outside of Pebble Hills. This concert will help grow both middle school and high school students knowledge and skills.

A student participating for the first time in the men’s choir concert is freshman Donovan Brown, who joined choir in middle school, is eager to perform for the first time at the high school level. His experience had influenced him to continue choir.

“Concerts I’m both excited about and also nervous just because there is a lot of work that goes into them especially timing and preparation and not just for me alone but for the entire choir whose preforming, it’s a lot of kids, it definitely puts stress on the teacher too and the kids playing,” Brown said.

Singing to a large audience can be a stressful situation especially if you have problems interacting day to day with people and crowds. For many it can become a very nerve wrecking and anxious experience. Donovan has found some stress in preparing for the concert but feels the result will bring to many a good and enjoyable memory.

“As much as it stresses me out and I’m nervous the entire time there really fun and once their out of the way it’s something to laugh about with the entire choir, we all share that one experience together and its fun getting everyone’s perspectives to it,” Brown said.

Donovan believes that attending rehearsals and the concert will help improve student’s performances in choir.

“The more work you put into something the better quality of it is, and I love producing good quality performances,” Brown said.

The person organizing and leading the choir concert is new choir teacher, Genevieve Tejeda. Tejeda, who came from teaching choir in middle school, wants to continue the tradition that former choir teacher, Joe Estala, started in the early years of Pebble Hills. Tejeda has graduated and studied for UTEP with music scholarship.

“In high school my choir teacher was awesome, we were a really untied group and we were successful,” Tejeda said. “That was always a happy memory in my life. It is very exciting to be getting tenders and bases together from high school and middle school from all over the district, it is a unique opportunity for students to perform at that concert.”

Of course, with so many students attending they are going to be some issues with having all the students attending. It is crucial for students to participate because it will give them an opportunity that will grow their understanding and knowledge in singing.

“The gentlemen have to realize the importance of it not only because it impacts their grade, but because it impacts our program it’s an opportunity for them to learn from other students and other directors which will make the program stronger and make them stronger as musicians,” Tejeda said.
