The National Honor Society hosted their 7th bi-annual blood drive Aug. 20 in the small gym. Throughout NHS history, they have collaborated with Vitalant to host blood drives at Pebble Hills.

After not being able to host blood drives on campus last year due yo the pandemic, senior Amanda Chavez talked about the importance  it is  for the community to participate and voluntarily donate.

“I think it’s amazing how many people would like to help and how many people take their time to donate their blood to save a life,” Chavez said. “The importance is to help out the community that needs blood and to help save a life. Overall, I think that’s the most important goal for today and to get as much help as we could.”

After going through the interview process and donating their blood, senior Eric Gutierrez describes his experience donating blood and explains how it encourages him to continue.

“It was a really nice experience, just the whole process was nice and easy at the school,” Gutierrez said. “It didn’t really hurt that much, it was just kind of uncomfortable but at the end it was really worth it.”

With the process being quick and easy, Gutierrez mentioned that that it felt good donating after.

Alongside students,  faculty and staff also took time out of their day to donate blood. Parent Liaison, Norma Acevedo, stopped at the small gym to donate. Acevedo also participated last fall semester at Vitalant on N. Zaragoza.

“For me, it is very important, I’ve received calls that they’ve used my blood to save somebody’s life,” Acevedo said. “That was a very touching moment for me that they actually reached out to me that they saved someone’s life using my blood. That’s why I do it and encourage everyone to do it as well.”

NHS plans to host another blood drive during the Spring semester.
