Fresh off completing their first season at the varsity level, the Spartans hit the field in preparation for their Spring Game May 24.

Ending the season with three consecutive losses and a record of 2-8, players are ready to start fresh.

“Varsity now has an understanding of what’s to come and have gone through a lot of preparation, that’s essentially it,” head coach Mark Torres said. “These players have unbreakable spirit. This combined with their unlimited determination are what will bring us the best season we can imagine.”

Defensive issues look to be addressed as the Spartans managed to allow 53 points or more in five of their losses last season.

Coach Torres remarked that any short comings last year, was due to lack of experience in a district loaded with talent.

“It wasn’t lack of determination,” Torres said. “Last year was our first year, and because of that, it was a learning experience for everyone. Next play means forget about before, be the best you can be at the moment, you name it we can improve it.”

A new method of encouraging players and getting them ready for next season was introduced with the Stud Award. The award is given to the player who stands out at practice that day, as well as otter pop plays; players who make an exceptional play at practice receive an otter pop when practice is over.

According to Torres, this is a very special award, and the players love claiming their prize at the end of practice.

“Spring Ball is for work, this keeps them motivated,” Torres said. “It keeps them focused and engaged. “This game showcases how far they have come since the previous season; but it’s not just about that. It’s about our community and team as a whole. To show that they are a family, and to demonstrate what our Spartan Football Team is all about.”

Captain Justin Wolfe is also very ecstatic about the upcoming season.

“I love being on the football field with my coaching staff and my teammates,” Wolfe said. “It’s very humbling just being in that position (team captain) to lead this team into every game they play.”

Practice sessions have been held after school on the practice field. The team is excited to start the new season loaded with experience. Unlike other teams, all players are returning.

“Giving 100 percent effort wasn’t hard at all because we have a passion for this,” Juan Santiago said. “It feels great, I think we’ll have an advantage over the other teams. Last year we only had sophomores and juniors and this year we’re coming back with seniors.”

Pebble Hills will kick off their season Aug. 31 at home against Irvin High School.
