The varsity volleyball team protected their home court against the reigning district 4A champions, Ysleta Indians, and collected their third win of the year Tuesday night Aug. 20.
Senior Hazel Acosta, who led with a team-high 26 assists, entered the game with high energy since the start.
“I think that it was a perfect game to start off our season at home, the girls were very hyped, and it showed on the court based on how we played together and the energy that was maintained throughout the match,” senior Ariel Martinez said. “Our team is pretty new together so my personal goal for the team is to help them gain mental toughness in different aspects that could eventually lead us to compete in playoffs.”
Despite the challenges after losing the second set, the varsity girls were determined to get the win.
“Our energy was high, and we are ready to keep working to get a winning streak going,” sophomore Kylah Dickerson said. “The goal for this upcoming season is to make it to the playoffs. That will be the first time in program history.”
As the season progresses, the varsity team is determined to make it to playoffs, as they continue to grow stronger and more cohesive as a team.
“I think we can work more on communication on different plays that we can run so that we have more opportunities to score to give us that advantage and lead against our opponent,” Martinez said.
The varsity prepares for their next home game Tuesday night Aug. 27 as they welcome the visiting Del Valle Conquistadores.
“We need to work with each other as a team and communicate better so we can take home another win,” said Dickerson about Tuesday’s match.
