The lady Spartans wasted no time in breaking their recent string of bad luck as they sent displayed their dominance in Tuesday’s non-conference game against the Horizon Scorpions as they flat out dominated the visiting team right from the start.

Facing a bit of a rough patch in the early season, the Spartans, who were playing without starting guard, Peyton Fields, played very well on the defense end, which helped lead to turnovers and easy points on the board. The plan was to test the guard play of the Scorpions and the zone press helped create multiple turnovers in the first quarter alone.

Offensively, the Spartans attacked the perimeter of the 2-3 zone as Jimiyah Stewart, Carla Padilla, Dinisha Prince hit a flashing Skylar Trujillo at the top of the key to hit a wide open Alexia Reynoso or Triniti Anderson. Anderson, who did not play last season, has been the go-to-player offensively. Anderson finished the game with 18 points.

Horizon tried to score on their inbounding play “Horizon” but failed as more on-the-ball-pressure forced mistakes.Working the paint and kicking the ball out to open shooter on the perimeter helped the Spartans, especially Padilla, who was able to knock down consecutive 3-pointers before the end of the first half.

Down 22 points, the head coach from the Scorpions failed to counter or have an offense plan to battle the press. He even continued to play zone for the majority of the game. The Spartans’ confidence continues to increase game-by-game. Injuries have caused them a slight hiccup, but they are a solid team that is deep and pitted for a strong run to secure a playoff berth and quite possibly a district title.
