After the storm of band season begins to calm down, the Spearettes Dance Team begins their journey into their first competition of the season at the 2026 PHHS Dance Classic on Sunday, Feb. 1.
Despite the heavy schedules in-between band and dance, dance coach, Vivian Blanco, has made it her priority to help them find balance.
“It is definitely very busy, but it’s trying to find the best organization and time management system, so that way, one, the girls don’t feel burned out and they still feel happy and enjoying being in band while doing dance,” Blanco said.
Leading up to the performance, the Spearettes had morning practice and after school practice for two hours every day.
On Jan. 30-31, they attended a two-day dance convention at Montwood High School where they participated in different dance classes such as hip-hop, jazz, pom, contemporary, and house. They also had a performance where they show off the routines they have been working on all year.
Senior Zoe Herrera has her own ways of preparing and believes that everyone plays a part in her preparation.
“I try and get into a very focused mindset and get really motivated and hyped for the dance, so I can really put my all into the dance when I’m out there performing,” Herrera said. “You know really… stay connected with my team emotionally, so we can all look united when we’re dancing and look together as one.”
Overall, the Spearettes took home second place in large varsity jazz and hip-hop, third place in large varsity jazz, and they received the judge’s choice award.
Senior Dove Rempfer performed a solo dancing to “Don’t You Remember” by Adele. Rempfer, who was honored at the start of the year after being selected as a TDEA all-state dancer, placed second overall out of 14 people, and was ranked in the gold category.
“That dance was basically just me dedicating all the time I spent dancing, and like it’s my first time competing since my freshman year since my injuries and everything,” Rempfer said.
The Spearettes will be competing in the Sun City Classical Feb. 13 at the El Paso County Coliseum. They are excited to see what this season has in store for them and are hoping to achieve bigger and better things.
