Pebble Hills held an emergency operations training coordinated with El Paso Police and Fire Departments Tuesday morning April 22.
The program, “Shattered Dreams” was implemented to showcase the dangers of drinking and driving.
Student activities director James Brown orchestrated the event with local officials. The hour-long presentation was held for seniors in front of the school to show the consequences of impaired driving.
The simulation is intended to be graphic and features a car crash, complete with emergency response.
“When I heard that they were going to have the presentation, I didn’t want to go,” senior Isaiah Flores said. “I thought it was going to be boring. Once I saw that they had a visual thing it caught everybody’s attention.”
With students involved in the mock collision, seniors were able to see someone they know become affected by decisions.
“I think students will benefit from it,” senior Daniella Figueroa said. ” I have a lot of conversations with my parents about drinking and driving, and I know there is people who don’t have that. Presentations like this are needed. Once, you see it up close, it is different. When you see it’s people you know, you realize it can be anybody. It can be someone you spend time with.”
Pebble Hills will be having prom this Saturday April 26 at the Starlight Center, 6650 Continental Dr.
“This was the perfect time,” Flores said. “Prom is literally this weekend and there’s parties here and there… This weekend kids are going to remember that [Shattered Dreams] and take it into consideration.”
