Top 5 Best Current Horror Movies

Izzy Sandoval, Reporter

With the weather changing and the sun going down earlier, take advantage of these shocking thrillers and all their sequels coming out in theaters soon. Start getting into the Halloween spirit; sit down at the couch with a bag of popcorn and your pumpkin pajamas and indulge in all these movies have to offer. I have come up with a list of five movies that you have to watch this Fall season that you can find on Peacock, Hulu, HBO Max, and Apple TV, but don’t forget to turn off the lights, because what’s a point of watching a horror movie if you’re not in the dark?

  1. ‘The Black Phone’ (2022):

The film including Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw was the most captivating movie this year. It had a brilliant concept that was brand new and had never been brought to the theater before. In this film, Mason Thames’ character, Finney gets captured by Ethan Hawke’s character, The Grabber, and gets taken to a soundproof basement with a disconnected phone that suddenly rings. Finney cautiously answers the phone and finds out that he can hear and talk to The Grabber’s former victims. As a Blumhouse fan, there is no disappointment in this film. The actors were insanely talented and really brought the story to life. Overall, a movie I can continue to watch repeatedly.

2. ‘The Curse of La Llorona’ (2019):

The Warner Brothers movie which incorporates “The Black Phone” actor, Madeleine McGraw blew my mind. The local story of “La Llorona” was twisted beautifully in a way that portrayed the story and created a fantastic new story. The movie takes place in Los Angeles, 1973, a social worker, Anna, played by Linda Cardellini learns of La Llorona when the boys who she was working with are found dead, with their mother, Patricia, blaming Anna for her children’s deaths. Soon after, the demon attaches herself to Anna’s kids, Chris, and Sam. This movie was filled with jump-scares and incredible music and sound effects that put the film over the top.

3.’The Forever Purge’ (2021):

This film is enjoyable especially since it displayed the beautiful towns of El Paso and Juarez. The movie shoots scenes near stores in downtown El Paso, the corner of First and Stanton, the Electric City building, and Scenic Drive where you can see La Equis or the X which is in La Plaza de la Mexicanidad. Seeing the locations of the city really made it feel like I was in the movie. What I really love about all Purge movies is most people, including me, like to picture what we would do if we were in the situation where our city had to take part in the Purge. The main characters in this film are played by actors, Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta, Will Patton, Josh Lucas, Cassidy Freeman, and Leven Rambin. This movie takes place in the future year of 2048, in Texas, where a Hispanic couple, Adela and Juan, who illegally crossed the America border are taking part in their first purge. They made it through it alive and safe, but a surprising shock came when a group of people continue to kill and declare a forever purge. I highly encourage everybody to watch this movie, all thought it is not exceedingly high in jump scares, it has a good and clear concept.

4.’Lights Out’ (2016):

The film starring Teresa Palmer, who got nominated best actor for this film in 2016 and Gabriel Bateman blew my mind. I enjoyed this simple and original movie. In this film, Teresa Palmer’s character Rebecca was haunted by a ghost, Diana, but as she got older, she decided that Diana was imaginary. Later, Diana gains attachment to Rebecca’s mother, Sophie, and Rebecca’s family begins to experience supernatural occurrences when the lights are out. Rebecca becomes a good role model as she cares about her brother Martin and protects him from her mom’s “psychotic mind.” What I loved about this movie is that it is not gory with blood and killing, it is scary in its own distinct way.

5.’Halloween’ (2018):

With all its sequels coming out, Halloween , which stars Nick Castle as Michael Myers, is currently rising to fame. As I said before, I am a huge fan of Blumhouse production, and they did a remarkable job with this film. This movie is definitely worth watching and Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays Laurie Strode, was phenomenal in every sequel of this series. The acting was amazing, and the kills were great. This film is basically a part two to the original 1978 film, the storyline just jumps 40 years into the future. Laurie Strode survived an attack from the crazed Michael Myers. Michael is now in an institution, but he escapes when his bus transfer goes insanely wrong. Laurie faces extreme terror when the masked killer comes back to Haddonfield, Illinois. This time though she is more than ready for his arrival. This sequel is outstanding, and I unquestionably recommend for everyone to watch this movie at least once.

Honorable Mention: “The Insidious” series, which had its first movie came out in 2010 and its final movie that came out in 2018. These movies have all the classic jump scares, but the movie keeps you on your toes so you will never expect when each jump scares will make you jump and scream. My favorite thing in these movies though must be the music, the music gives me actual chills. The opening music is a jump scare in itself and “Tip Toe Thru’ the Tulips with Me” is an Insidious classic; you will never be able hear it without seeing a creepy little boy running through the halls. I advise everybody to watch this film, you will not regret it.
