The season opener and senior night, there seemed to be many mixed emotions that intensified the game even more.

Hours before the game, Isaiah Davis talked about having a big year and he did just that.

“It’s a team, we can’t really do anything without the team,” Davis said.

Davis delivered and in a big way as he pulled in four touchdowns in the Spartans 54-12 win over El Dorado.

“He’s an explosive player, that’s kind of what he is supposed to do, that’s why schools want him to go play there,” head coach Mark Torres said. “No matter how talented we are, we still go to be within yourself, don’t try to do too much at a time.”

In the first drive, Pebble Hills was flagged three times which forced them to punt the ball.

Jalen Partida scored the first touchdown of the football season and gave the Spartans the 7-0 lead.

The Aztecs were digging themselves in a bigger hole with just as many penalties and an offensive drive that ended with a fumble in the end zone. On a play that could have tied the game, seemed to demoralize the Aztecs as they gave the Spartans possession.

Pebble Hills made them pay with another scoring drive, 14-0.

Another defensive miscue from the Aztecs came late in the first half, as they let Sebastian Ochoa and Isaiah Davis connect on a 43-yard touchdown pass as the clock expired to end the half.

Pebble Hills finished the half with a 21-0 lead. The deficit would be too much for the Aztecs.

El Dorado’s Christopher Bustillos connected to Kris Martin for a 19-yard touchdown. It took seconds for Anthony Donacio to answer as he ran a kick return for an 83-yard touchdown and erase any hopes of a comeback for the Aztecs.

The Spartans have never lost a season opener and look to clinch a playoff berth for the third consecutive year.

“I thought we played with great effort, but we had a lot of penalties so we have a lot of cleaning up, we can’t go to Midland and beat a team like that, we got to clean that up for sure,” said Torres on his team’s performance early in the first half.

Pebble Hills goes on the road to play their next against Midland at the Grande Communications Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday afternoon Sept. 6. The last time the teams met, Pebble Hills escaped a second-half surge from the Bulldogs in their 42-38 win last September.
