For the first time in Socorro Independent School District football history, two unbeaten (8-0) teams will face off against each other for not only the number one spot in the city, but for the 1-6A District Title. The Pebble Hills Spartans and the Montwood Rams have both bulldozed their way through the season, defeating every team in their way, and now, finally, their paths will cross and they will square off at the Student Activities Complex on Friday Nov. 3rd at 7 p.m.

Statistically speaking, Montwood has the best offense whereas Pebble Hills has the best defense in the city. Senior Montwood quarterback Andrew Fernandez has an astonishing 2,340 passing yards and 36 touchdown passes, roughly 1,000 more yards and 20 more TD’s than Spartan Quarterback Orlando Puig. However, as they say, offense wins games, defense wins championships. The Spartans have only allowed 139 points against them, the least in the city. Montwood has allowed nearly 100 more, at 238 points.

The offensive line for the Spartans will be a concern for the Rams heading into the tonight’s title game.

Left tackle, Dietrich King, left guard, Ivan Ibarra, center, Talon Tappscott, right guard, Mario Carmona, and right tackle Anthony Miranda have remained the starting five throughout the year. They have not changed since the first game; which has helped them build chemistry and play style.

Stellar play on the front line this year has made a huge difference as they have provided more than enough time for Puig to get his throws off and have created holes for running backs to feast on, therefore indirectly winning the game.

Caleb Gerber, who is fresh off his 7 touchdown game, says he has his offensive line to thank.

Carmona, who has collected several hardware this year for his performance on the field, and might not score one single touchdown his entire career at Pebble Hills, has helped create scoring opportunities for his teammates.

“I love running touchdowns because we made that hole for him, it is fun doing your job and seeing others be successful because of what you do,” Carmona said.

Pebble Hills has absolutely every reason to be satisfied with their season at this point, finishing last season with a record of 2-8, and losing to Montwood 37-20, who would eventually share the district title with Americas, and El Dorado, the Spartans have since improved and clinched a spot in the postseason. However; this team wants more than that. They want to avenge their loss against Montwood, and continue their quest of finishing the regular season with a perfect record.

An unstoppable offense versus an unbeatable defense. The game everyone wants to see. It will undoubtedly be an incredible game, one for the books. History will be made.
